ACCESSIBILITY

“Onde tem Coronavirus?” is a project supported by Universidade Federal do ABC and carried out by a team of volunteers and academics supported by scholarships. The project’s chief aim is to publish qualified information for everyone. At a time when we all face the impacts of COVID-19, to be well-informed also constitutes a protective measure, since fake or incomplete news is published daily in numerous outlets. Besides, the team believes that the territorialized presentation of data can take the comprehension about the pandemic onto another level, rendering evident to all people, the reality of each region or municipality in Brazil.

According to the 2010 Census carried out by IBGE (Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística), 23.9% of the Brazilian population has some kind of disability, and, within this group, just those with visual and hearing impairments add up to more than 16.5 million Brazilians. Thanks to Hand Talk, who is collaborating in the building of more accessible websites, the team now has a new member! Hugo, a Brazilian Sign Language (BSL) interpreter. Hugo will help us cater for people with hearing impairment, who will now be able to navigate our site more easily. Besides, we have adapted new and old postings by adding subtitles to videos, as well as audio descriptions, and alternative texts alongside images and infographics.

In this sense, our commitment is with the democratic dissemination of the data we have researched and of the analyses we have carried out. We are, therefore, working on the development of content with an increasingly wider reach, incorporating accessibility tools and strategies so that every person can be informed about the evolution of COVID-19 in Brazil. If you have any doubts or suggestions, do not hesitate to contact us!
